Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions regarding hypnotherapy and the treatment process. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
How does hypnotherapy work?
The mind is part conscious and part sub-conscious (approximately 10% conscious and 90% subconscious). The conscious mind acts almost like a security guard or gatekeeper. When you are relaxed, the security guard is not present and this is when positive messages and affirmations can be embedded by the therapist into your subconscious mind, using a variety of tools and techniques.
The subconscious cannot differentiate between fact and fiction - and this is how permanent positive change is brought about.
It takes approximately 21 days to change a behaviour, or get rid of a habit for example, so three or four sessions of hypnotherapy are usually needed.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation. We all go into a form of hypnosis every day when we daydream for example or when we're about to go to sleep or when we are just waking up. It is a very relaxed state and often happens when we're engrossed in a good book or Netflix series! You will get a real feel for it when you book a consultation and relaxation session too!
Can you make me do something I don't want to?
Absolutely not! All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and this means that you will never do anything you don't want to do.
Stage hypnotists have certainly not helped professional hypnotherapists at all and it is a myth that you can be made to do things that don't align with your morals or values.
What if I don't remember everything?
Because the subconscious part of your mind is responsible for looking after you, it is always listening! It doesn't matter if you feel like you have nodded off because your subconscious will have heard and retained the information.
